Procedure Text

Procedure text is a text that is designed to describe how something is achieved through a sequence of actions or steps. It explains how people perform different processes in a sequence of steps.

Language Features of Procedure Text

The language features of procedure text are:

• Use simple present tense
• Use of connectives (example: first, then, finally) 
• Use of adverbial phrases (example. : for five minutes, 2 centimeters from the top)
• Use of imperatives (example: cut, don’t mix)
• Use of action verbs (example: turn, put, mix)

The Generic Structure of Procedure

1. Goal: It is contain the purpose of the text. (e.g. : How to make brownies)
2. Material or Ingredient: it is contain of the materials that used in the process. (e.g. : the material to cook are chocolate, salt,  butter ,eggs ,soft brown sugar , plain flour, etc)
3. Step: it is contain of the steps to make something in the goal. (e.g. : first, First, Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F/180ºC.

Purpose of a Procedure Text

An anticipated outcome that is intended or that guides your planned actions. A particular course of action intended to achieve a result. Or To help us do a task or make something. They can be a set of instructions or directions.

Example of Procedure :

How to make a chocolate brownies (aim/goal)

You need (materials)

·    1 package of brownie mix

·         2 eggs

·         2/3 vegetable oil

·         1/4 water

·         Butter or spray (to grease the pan)

What you should do are : (steps)

1.  First, Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F/180ºC.

2.  Prepare the mixture. As you are waiting for the oven to preheat, mix the brownie mix, the eggs, the vegetable oil, and the water together. It sounds easy, but the mix will get very thick. Mix for about 2 minutes, or until well blended. An electric mixer will do just fine too.

3.  Grease the pan. When the oven is ready or about to be, grab the cake pan and grease it with the spray. Make sure to get the sides too so when you flip the brownies cake onto a plate, it will slide easily.

4.  Pour mix onto cake pan and insert it into the oven.

5.  Set the timer to at least 25 minutes.

6.  Allow to cool when the brownie cake is ready.

7.  Put a plate on top of the cake pan and flip it over.

8.  Decorate it in whatever way you like. Be creative. Write "Happy Birthday", "Surprise!", etc., on the surface of the cake. Decorate it with balloons, flowers, etc.
